11:46 pm - Reflections on Woodstock
Jefferson Airplane had incredible charisma.

Ten Years After deserved to be better remembered.

Janis Joplin was much more annoying than I realized.

Jimi Hendrix made much uglier music than I remembered.

4:17 am - Will You Be Staying After Sunday
I missed Sunday. I went to bed at noon and slept fourteen hours on account of a power failure. When I awoke, it was pitch black and sixty degrees, and I ate the rest of my pastrami sandwich. Not a bad way to start a week.

12:53 pm - Tact
At a meeting this morning, discussion turned to the governor's race. I cautioned against the spread of malicious rumors about potential candidates until we knew whether they were true, and a woman accused me of taking away her second amendment rights.

The woman is a former U.S. House nominee.

5:57 pm - Someone's in the kitchen with Dinah.
Things I did not expect to find so many of in the refrigerator:

8 jars mustard, including 3 French's, excluding mostarda di Cremona with 1/31/2000 expiration date
6 jars pickles, including 4 Mt. Olive
5 bottles Rival snow cone syrup
5 packages parmesan cheese, including 3 Kraft
4 packages Fresh Express field greens
4 jars olives, including 2 Mazzetta and 2 Shur Fine

Things I did not expect to find so many of in the cupboard:

5 jars McCormick stick cinnamon
3 boxes Dixie Crystals powdered sugar

Evidently, my mother only thought she cleaned out the refrigerator.

3:18 am - With apologies to Skunk Anansie
Instructions: Put your iTunes collection on shuffle, and write down the first line of the first twenty songs. Post the poem that results. The first line of the twenty-first is the title.

"100 Ways to Be a Good Girl"

Have you ever climbed on a big high mountain
Watch this picture blow
I don't go in for crazy stuff
I'll be tired of you
Tired but I ain't sleeping

Hey, little girl
Three, four
Come on
Come on!
Well, I won't

I guess I've got a hot mitt
It's make believe ballroom time
I kneel before her
To you
There was a boy

Somewhere I got lost
Belly is craving
Parlez no
With all the simple times behind me
You better believe I'm coming

Disclaimer: "I guess I've got a hot mitt" turned out to be "I guess I've got a heart meant," but I'd never have figured that out on my own, and it's not nearly as good.

4:43 pm - Smiles Everyone
On the walk to the dentist, I noticed the directive on the bus: "SMILE, IT'S SUNNY." Where, Australia? Hideous weather here.

The dentist said I had a deep cavity and was right to seek immediate attention. He charged only half what I anticipated, which makes up for the suitcase snafu. Oh, and I found another dime.

6:02 am - Mystery from Italy
I am very happy right now.

In August 1998, I heard a song on the radio. I made a mental note the singer was a hangman, and one day, his son would be a hangman. I have asked around ever since what it was, and neither human being nor search engine could help me out. Well, I figured it out about twenty minutes ago.

In November 1998, I heard another song that eluded me equally. I wrote down "relinquishing thoughts of attachment" and figured that one out about two and a half years later. My eternal gratitude no longer hangs in the balance, but reply if you recognize either of these.

No matter how much I like a good online conversation, there is still no substitute for a good offline conversation. Much less a good offline all-night conversation.

12:01 pm - James Sammons's Celebrity Hot Tub Party
Lauren and Jim talked about the hot tub the whole time. My back has hurt the whole time, so I thought I would check it out if there were time after they did. Well, they never did, but I had an hour and a half, so I did. There were actually two hot tubs, and one was anything but hot. The other was fine, though, and I took advantage for two fifteen minute intervals. At the start of the second, a little boy beat on the door, and I tried to tell him a key is necessary for entry. Two other little boys got in another door, though, and let him in also. The first thing the smallest did was knock my key all the way to the bottom of the hot tub. It took two or three minutes to get him to comprehend the concept of a key. Then they splashed around until someone in uniform asked whether they were with me. Uh, no. I still had a good time. I told my mother, and she told Lauren and Jim and completely left out that I still had a good time.

8:58 pm - California wine on a cold afternoon
Stephanie and I met at Aroma and talked about my past trip to Seattle and her future trip to Columbus. I do not care for the cappuccino at Aroma, but they may have the best espresso around here. It was as good as the meat burek.

I was supposed to go out of town but by staying got to try a rare stone pine liqueur. It was surprisingly subtle. I would recommend it.

12:19 am - Way up north in Shreveport
The last three days have been the best since spring break. Today was WEFTfest, and after a whirlwind wine tasting in Urbana, I announced The Greytones after 5:00 and just hung out the next six hours. Mark and Vicki sold me a very tasty fish sandwich, and Avi and Jason started a Frisbee circle in the middle of Market Street that really got good about twilight. I bungled the first fifteen throws but clinched every single one of the last twenty.

Terminus Victor headlined WEFTfest; this was the set list:

0. My Collision Course
1. Cue the Disclaimer
2. Hands of Gridlock
3. One Tough Customer
4. Submit
5. Scott solo improv
6. Dressed for Much Less
7. Now All We Need Is a Reason
8. Transmission
9. Hopelessly Rehabilitated
10. Your Nemesis
11. Arctic Living
12. The Mechanical Eye

Nathan III and I had on the same shirt, so we posed for pictures after the set. I talked with Terry awhile, and Scott surprised me with a Bacardi and Coke before I called it a night.
